GR what? Ground Reality!…err…excuse the pun!
The last couple of years have seen a surge in AR & VR segment in India, (not much in MR though) but is yet to set a firm foothold owing to obvious factors affecting the nascent startup culture in the country. The problem is the “Cultural Context”. Startups rarely if at all ring any bell at the grassroots, walking in the soles of the shoeless.
We are so caught up with the buzz (words) and the happening and the latest and the hottest that oblivious of the actual need and desideratum of the needy and the underprivileged Indian, hop on a ride to – where most of the millennial startups end – dead end! crash!
The Ground realities are far away muddled in, with the liable (and the intended) beneficiaries suffering at the altar of the startup bubble burst. AR and VR could be a boon to the ailing rural and semi urban health and education sector in India, but the focus on mundane and the outta-box has left the lay Indian under the banyan tree left wanting for.
When despite the best of efforts that governmental and non governmental agencies are putting in, millions abandon school for glimmer prospects to afford a humble square meal for the family; emerging India of our dreams takes a backseat awaiting a 100% literacy. Though there are startups into genetics and biochemical engineering (well a couple of), yet there is no concrete effort to eliminate the basics – hygiene woes and neonatal problems that abound and which is a major contributor in annual terms to the mortality rate in India.
India won’t emerge healthy and educated and self aware unless there is a push; a thwart sort of; unless there`s a surge of startup which would willingly lend arm to the cause. AR & VR have some major potential to achieve that; especially in rural India. If you have the angel investor backing your project may be you should include a couple of basics in the itinerary of the project. Elemental is to connect to the roots.
