SJAIN VENTURES has become one of the handful corporates in the state of Chhattisgarh and presumably the only IT firm to strictly implement the Vishaka guidelines in the organization. The guidelines became effective in the company policies and schematics of operations since July 2016 with a standing committee to oversee the same.
With the growing menace of sexual harassment of women at workplace, the Supreme Court promulgated a guideline to safeguard women from being sexually harassed or manipulated at workplace. The guidelines came in effect after the gory Bhanwari Devi incident that inflamed Rajasthan during mid-90s when Vishaka a women`s right wing group filed a PIL in the supreme court, infuriated by the repeated brutal molestation of Bhanwari Lal. She who was subject to the gruesome act by the upper class landlords for preventing child marriage as a part of her duty as a worker of the women`s development program.
The litigation was filed in the late 90`s and the hon`ble supreme court passed a resolution in 1997 laying out principle guidelines to check any untowardly incident against women especially in the workplace. The guidelines came to be known as the vishaka guidelines. It is mandatory for every firm to abide by the guidelines.
Mr. Kunal (Operations & Manager-Sjain Ventures) catalyzed the initiative as an endeavor to ensure the comfy working environment at Sjain, a homely one for the women employees. An IIT Roorkee alumnus, Mr. Kunal superintends the Vishaka committee spearheaded by Mrs. Mansi Patro (Head- digital marketing), Ms. Sabah Khanam (HR), Ms. Divya Deshmukh (Team Lead- Digital Marketing) and Ms. Phalguni Sarkar (Lead content writer & Journalist). The Sexual Harassment Act requires an employer to set up an ‘Internal Complaints Committee’ (“ICC”) at each office or branch having more than 10 employees of any gender. The ICC reports to the ‘Local Complaints Committee’ (“LCC”) which is a government appointed district level committee, constituted to look after to any reporting done by the ICC.
The company has set a precedent for all the corporates across varied domain in Chhattisgarh. Although, incidents like the Tehelka editor case and the likes have never been prominently reported in the state., yet it would be safe to assume that Chhattisgarh is a safer Probably the only state in the country where the state is referred to as “mother Chhattisgarh” (mahtari chhattisgarh in Chhattisgarhi), Chhattisgarh has a good credential as far as women`s rights is concerned.
